Activities in government offices and public hospitals in Ogun State were paralysed on Monday as government workers in the state complied with the directive of the Joint National Public Negotiating Council for the commencement of an indefinite strike.
Labour leaders blocked one of the entrances leading to the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, as early as 8am, preventing workers from proceeding to their offices.
Labour alleged that the government reneged on the Memorandum of Understanding signed with state workers on January 25, 2016, which had necessitated the need for the workers to shun work.
The entire secretariat looked like a ghost town as most of the civil servants stayed away from work, while only a few top government officials were seen at their duty posts.
It was learnt that the workers complied with the no-work directive in the 20 local government areas of the state.
The General Secretary of JNC, Comrade Olusegun Adebiyi, described the level of compliance as impressive, insisting that the strike would not be called off until government fulfilled the agreement.
The union had, on Sunday, declared an indefinite strike over the failure of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration to respect the MoU signed by a tripartite group of the state labour leaders, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the state government on January 25 this year.
