No fewer than 500 motorists have been convicted by 10 special mobile courts for traffic offences in Edo State.
The Executive Director, Tax Compliance, Edo State Internal Revenue Service, Felix Isuku, who stated this on Tuesday in Benin, added that the convictions followed a joint operation carried out by the revenue service, the police, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Vehicle Inspection Office and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Isuku said, “Over 500 persons have been tried for offences ranging from the use of fake driving licence to expired motorcycle and vehicle papers.
“Other offences they were arraigned for were overloading, non-possession of fire extinguishers and the use of tinted glass without permit.”
He explained that the team was able to expose vehicle owners who failed to renew their particulars after they expired about five years ago.
Isuku, who said the exercise was a continuous one, urged motorists to carry out proper registration at any of the four data capturing centres in Benin, Auchi and Ekpoma.
He also maintained that the presentation of tax clearance certificates, as a condition for the registration of motor vehicles, was still in force.
