Gulder Ultimate Search Season 11 ‘The Cube’ Is Coming

The stage is set for the selection of 12 contestants, from the 30 shortlisted, to compete for the ultimate prize of Gulder Ultimate Search Season 11 tagged ‘The Cube.’ See their website HERE.

The event will  take place Saturday, 6 September, at the Oceanview Ground of the Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

At the Final Selection Party to round off the preliminary stages, the 12 finalists comprising six male and six female will emerge from 30 shortlisted contestants who scaled through the just concluded rigorous regional screenings which took place in Awka, Benin, Port Harcourt and Lagos.

They will then proceed to the forest of Aguleri in Anambra State, which will be playing host to this year’s edition of the search.

The contestant who emerges the Ultimate hero from the contest will go home with the grand prize of N10 million and an SUV, while the second, third and fourth runners up will get N3 million, N2.5 million and N1.5 million respectively.

When evicted, each of the contestants will receive various sums of money, ranging from N1million to N1.5 million.

Gulder Ultimate Search (also called GUS) is a Nigerian reality television series, created and sponsored by Nigerian Breweries Plc. The first season premiered in 2004. President Goodluck Jonathan just launched today (August 28, 2014) the new national e-ID card at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This new e-ID card would serve a multi-purpose form of identification, including daily transactions and payments and also bio-metric purposes. 
The new e-ID card is powered by MasterCard.

Finally! Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt Wed In France

According to reports, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finally tied the knot on Saturday 23rd August, 2014 in the French hamlet of Correns, a spokesman for the couple says.

Jolie and Pitt wed in a small chapel in a private ceremony attended by family and friends at Provence's Chateau Miraval. In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Pitt and Jolie obtained a marriage license from a local California judge. The judge also conducted the ceremony in France.

The couple's children took part in the wedding. Jolie walked the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox and Pax. Zahara and Vivienne threw flower petals. Shiloh and Knox served as ring bearers, the spokesman says.

Jolie and Pitt's wedding caps years of rampant speculation on when the couple would officially tie the knot. Pitt once said that he didn't want to marry until gay marriage was legal, but in recent years, both said they intended to. They were engaged in early 2012 after some seven years together.

"It's an exciting prospect, even though for us, we've gone further than that," Pitt told The Associated Press in an interview in November 2012. "But to concretize it in that way, it actually means more to me than I thought it would. It means a lot to our kids."

They have six children together, including three they adopted: 13-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia; 10-year-old Pax, from Vietnam; and 9-year-old Zahara, from Ethiopia. The couple's three biological children are 8-year-old Shiloh, and Knox and Vivienne, 6-year-old twins.

This is the second marriage for Pitt, who wed Jennifer Aniston in 2000. They divorced in 2005.

Jolie was previously married to British actor Jonny Lee Miller for three years in the late '90s and to Billy Bob Thornton for three years before divorcing in 2003.

Both Jolie and Pitt are prepping movies. Jolie's second directorial effort, the World War II odyssey "Unbroken," will be released in December. Pitt stars in the upcoming World War II drama "Fury," due out Oct. 17.

Is Obasanjo Starting A War With Jonathan?

Former, President Olusegun Obasanjo is at it again with incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. 

According to thecable.ng, article allegedly quoting Obasanjo saying Nigerian economy is as bad as it was under former military head of state, Gen. Sani Abacha, who ruled the country from 1993 to 1998. 

It should be recalled that Obasanjo's open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan last year caused tension between both of them and heated Nigeria's political atmosphere.

Obasanjo was speaking with market women who asked him to give them direction on who to vote for in 2015. Jonathan is expected to seek re-election next year. Obasanjo said the middle class has been wiped out “as it was under Abacha” and illustrated his statement by reading a text message for help sent to him by a Nigerian.
“I told him we experienced this at the time of Abacha, the middle class was completely destroyed.
“I was surprised the day a colonel in the army came to me complaining that he and his family could not afford to buy a car.
“A friend, Dr. Okoro, was a medical doctor, his wife was also a medical doctor and they have a daughter who is also a medical doctor, but they could not afford a new car, and had to go to Saudi Arabia,” he said.

Japan Ready To Offer Trial Ebola Drug

According to ChannelnewsAsia, Tokyo stands ready to offer an experimental drug developed by a Japanese company to help stem the global tide of the deadly Ebola virus, the top government spokesman said Monday (Aug 25). "Our country is prepared to provide the yet-to-be approved drug in cooperation with the manufacturer if the WHO requests," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been discussing the use of unapproved drugs as a way of getting a handle on an outbreak in Africa that has already cost more than 1,400 lives, with thousands more people infected. There is currently no available cure or vaccine for Ebola, and the WHO has declared the latest outbreak a global public health emergency.

Several drugs are under development. The use of an experimental drug called ZMapp on two Americans and a Spanish priest infected with the virus while working in Africa has opened up an intense ethical debate. The drug, which is in very short supply, has reportedly shown promising results in the two Americans, although the priest died. US company Mapp Bioparmaceutical which makes the drug said this month it had sent all its available supplies to west Africa.

The WHO earlier said a panel of medical experts had determined it is "ethical" to provide experimental treatments.

Suga said Monday: "Even before the WHO reaches a conclusion, we are ready to respond to individual requests (from medical workers) under certain conditions if it is an urgent case." The medication Suga was referring to is Avigan, a drug in tablet form that was approved as an anti-influenza drug in Japan in March and is currently in clinical tests in the United States.

Its developer Fujifilm Holdings said it had received inquiries from abroad but declined to say how many and from which countries. The company, which has diversified into healthcare fields, has "no problem" over the amount of stockpiles, according to spokesman Takao Aoki. "We have sufficient supplies for more than 20,000 people," he said.

2015: Mimiko Decamps From LP, Joins PDP

Ondo state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko on Friday formally declared his intention to join the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to a report, Governor Mimiko has dumped his party, Labour Party(LP) he has sustained as its only governor and national leader since 2006.

The governor has already informed members of his cabinet and close political associates in a chain of meetings which took place on Friday at the Government

House Akure.

Some of his aides were already on their way to their various local government areas as at the time of this report to inform their constituents of the governor’s decision.

This goes to show that the opposition parties are not strong enough to stand the fire power of the ruling PDP

I’m Not Gay, Says BBA Winner Uti Nwachukwu

The 2010 winner of Big Brother Africa (BBA), Uti Nwachukwu, has said that he is neither gay nor in relationships with older women.

Nwachukwu, who is also a co-presenter of ‘Jara,’ a showbiz programme on Multi-Choice’s Dstv, said this on NET, an online entertainment platform and described such stories as “nothing but bad press.”

“In Nigeria, once you are young in the entertainment industry and you are doing well, the next thing they tag you with is that you are either dating an older woman or that you are gay,” he said.

He, however, admitted that he was in a relationship but with a young lady and said, “I am a very passionate person; when I love, I do more than the average person.

“I could be a bit possessive and all that.”

On his experience in Big Brother All Stars, he said that the reality show was a platform that helped to correct the mistakes he made in BBA 3, in which he was a contestant.

“Big Brother Africa 3 was easy but I was lucky to get a second chance. For BBA All Stars, they didn’t just bring back anybody; they brought back the best from Seasons 1- 4.

“These were people who had come out of the show and people had pointed out their mistakes to them.

“I won’t lie by saying I didn’t have my own strategies,” Nwachwukwu said.

Boko Haram Takes Over Another Nigeria Town: Witnesses, Official

KANO, August 21, 2014 (AFP) - Boko Haram has seized control of a town in northeastern Nigeria, the latest to fall into Islamist hands in the crisis-hit region, witnesses and a local official said Thursday.

Several residents who fled the Boko Haram assault on Buni Yadi in Yobe state said it began late last month, with the insurgents ultimately taking over the main government building.

They have reportedly raised their flag above the building and have carried out summary executions, including of two people who were caught smoking cigarettes.

Abdullahi Bego, the spokesman for Yobe's Governor Ibrahim Geidam, could not confirm the executions.

But he told AFP: "As I speak there are no military in Buni Yadi and locals say that Boko Haram come and go as they please.

"So many people from Buni Yadi have fled to the state capital Damaturu," he added.

Residents said the rebels, who massacred dozens of students at a boarding school in Buni Yadi in February and kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from neighbouring Borno state in April, had set up roadblocks.

They were also robbing people as they tried to flee.

"I left Buni Yadi yesterday (Wednesday) because it was no longer safe for me and my family," said trader Surajo Muhammad.

The gunmen "shot dead two men for smoking and they also killed a known drug peddler", he added.

Tijjani Bukar, who also fled, reported the same executions.

"I couldn't stay any longer because I came to realise these people have come to stay," he said.

"I thought they would be there for a few days but from our understanding they have turned the town into their (territory)."

The United Nations has confirmed that Boko Haram had seized control of the towns of Damboa and Gwoza in Borno state in recent weeks.

There are indications that Damboa was retaken by the military in an offensive earlier this month but details are not clear.

Peace reigns after nightfall in Ferguson for the first time in nearly a week

Justice is a long way off. But on Wednesday night in Ferguson, Mo., there was finally a stretch of peace.

For the first evening in nearly a week, protests here went off unmarred by any major skirmishes between police and protesters. On a rainy night, a smaller-than-usual group of protesters still paced the wet streets, doing laps along West Florissant Avenue as their voices grew hoarse from chanting slogans. Small groups huddled along the battered boulevard, mostly unbothered by a police presence reduced from previous nights.

It was a rare respite. For nearly a fortnight, days in Ferguson have been boisterous but peaceful. But when the sun goes down, the dynamic has changed as a cadre of confrontational youth stir up trouble under the cover of night.

Wednesday was different. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder touched down in Ferguson Wednesday morning, meeting with community leaders, local residents, students and patrons at a local diner. The trip was a bid to turn down the thermostat on an overheated city that has been aflame since Aug. 9, when Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man, was shot to death by a white police officer.

The visit from Holder, who is not just the nation’s top cop but also a black man who has spoken frankly about race, seemed to calm a mostly black community that has complained vehemently about its treatment at the hands of a nearly all-white police force. Holder also arrived on the day that a grand jury began to hear evidence in Brown’s shooting death. The attorney general’s trip was a token of solidarity, as Holder offered assurances that the federal government—which is conducting its own civil rights probe into the case—will conduct a thorough investigation.

The beleaguered city also got help from the weather. Wednesday was sweltering, with a soggy humidity that kept daytime street protests to a minimum; at mid-afternoon, West Florissant almost seemed back to normal. As darkness descended, lightning forked through the sky and thunder rumbled, announcing a rainstorm that kept troublemakers off the streets.

However, there were still some skirmishes. At one point, two white people—a woman and a man—arrived brandishing signs advertising support for Darren Wilson, the 28-year-old six-year veteran of the Ferguson Police Department who shot Brown on Aug. 9. They slid into the crowd, sparking a brief outrage. Water bottles went flying. But the police did not overreact, instead spiriting the agitators away from the crowd and off the scene. Throughout the evening, angry protesters vented at police, screaming about their treatment, including a rule that prohibits people from gathering in place, forcing the crowd to stay mobile by looping up and down the street.

And so they did. “We’re young! We’re strong! We’re marching all night long!” they chanted. Peace hasn’t come yet to this troubled St. Louis suburb; it remains a tinderbox susceptible to a spark. But for the first time in a long time on Wednesday, that spark never came.
