Rev. King’s death sentence caused by witches, wizards - Church members allege

Members of Christian Praying Assembly (CPA) which was hitherto run by Chukwuemeka Ezeugo aka Reverend King, who was last Friday condemned to death by the Supreme court, have alleged that the apex's court final decision on the murder charges against him was the handiwork of witches and wizards.

“Our G.O. (General Overseer) the most holiness, Rev King, is coming back. He said he would come back and we believe the words of his mouth. We believe his report that he is coming back. Everything happening now we know is the handiwork of witches and wizard. Soon a new story will emerge. Whether people realize it or not, everybody now knows his holiness, our G.O. Rev King. The front pages of newspapers are flooded with his name. People are yearning to read about him in the social media. I can confirm to you that by all these, a lot of people have become endeared to him. Our Daddy G.O. shall live forever for us in Jesus name".
They sang hymns and danced to mark Reverend King's birthday whose death sentence was confirmed on his birthday which was last Friday Feb 26th.

Woman faces 25 years imprisonment after admitting to sex with 14 year old in her home

A 27 year old mother Kristeen Harden is set to face a maximum of 25 years in prison after admitting to police that she groomed and had sex at least once with a 14 year old boy. The young boy was on his way to visit his mother when he was lured by Kristeen into her house to have sex with her.

The boy's father reported to police after he noticed illicit messages between the pair on the son's Facebook and whatsapp accounts.

Harden told the news station: “There’s a lot I’d like to say, but I would like lawyers and everything.” “They had chatted on Facebook back and forth,” the boy's dad Lt. Johnny Guy told the police.

Pastor bags 14 years for corruption

A Chinese court has sentenced a Christian pastor to 14 years in jail for embezzlement and other charges, a court official confirmed Monday, after the preacher opposed the forced removal of crosses from churches.
A court in the eastern province of Zhejiang sentenced Bao Guohua for embezzlement, disturbing public order, illegal business operations and concealing information about business accounts, local media have reported.
His wife Xing Wenxiang was jailed for 12 years, they said. The two were also fined and their assets seized for appropriating cash and a house which belonged to the church, reports added.
An official at a court in Jinhua city, where the sentencing took place on Thursday, confirmed the sentences to AFP but declined further comment.
Bao and Xing were detained in July last year after they spoke out against forced cross removals in Zhejiang. The court jailed 10 other people in connection with the case, the Zhejiang Daily newspaper and local television said, but did not give the lengths of their sentences.
Earlier, the province announced rules requiring crosses for Catholic and Protestant churches to be attached to the front of the building, rather than on the roof, and be no more than a tenth of the building’s height.
China’s officially atheist Communist authorities are wary of any organised movements outside their control, including religious ones, and analysts say controls over such groups have tightened under President Xi Jinping.
In 2014, Wenzhou city in Zhejiang demolished the large Sanjiang Church, following government declarations it was an illegal structure.
The state-linked China Christian Council estimates the country has around 20 million Christians, excluding Catholics, in official churches supervised by the authorities.
But the true number of worshippers could be higher, at least 40 million to 60 million, according to some estimates, as some pray at “underground” or “house” churches which seek to exist outside government control.
US-based religious rights group China Aid said authorities forced Bao and Xing to dismiss their lawyers before the trial.

Buhari free to review his electoral promises - Al Makura

Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura, on Monday said President Muhammadu Buhari was at liberty to review his party’s electoral promise of paying N5,000 monthly allowances to unemployed youths in the country.
He said Buhari cannot be challenged by anybody once he takes a decision on the matter.
Al-Makura said this while briefing State House correspondents after meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
While dismissing the N5,000 as a largesse, the President had said he had a “slightly different priority” from the position of his party on the payment.Buhari had during an interactive session in Saudi Arabia ruled out the payment of N5,000 monthly allowances to unemployed youths in the country as promised by his party, the All Progressives Congress, ahead of the 2015 presidential election.
“This largesse, N5,000 for the unemployed, I have got a slightly different priority. I would rather do the infrastructure, the school and correct them and empower agriculture, mining so that every able-bodied person can go and get work instead of giving N5,000 to those who don’t work,” Buhari declared.
Al-Makura however said Buhari was at Liberty to change his position on the matter because he is taking decisions for the good of the country.
He said nobody, no matter how highly placed can challenge the President on the matter.
The governor said, “The President is the person that can tell you precisely how he is working on promises and interventions that he has created by his ingenuity.
“And if at any point in time, the President is reviewing that issue, I think he is the only person to do that because what he is doing is in the best interest of the country.
“And so, it is not challengeable by anybody whatever his position.”

Al-Makura disclosed that during the meeting he had with Osinbajo, they discussed about the security situation in his state and that of Benue State which had led to bloody clashes between herdsmen and farmers.

Tragedy as Man kills seven co-workers for being racially bullied

Tragedy struck the people of Kansas yesterday - when seven innocent people were shot and at least four killed in a mass shooting. But the CIRCUMSTANCES surrounding the shooting is sure to have the entire nation talking.
Authorities say that a 38 year old father-of-two named Cedric Ford clocked into work as a painter at lawn-mower manufacturing firm Excel Industries in Hesston, Kansas, on Thursday morning.
Police say that hours later he left the building - and returned with a high-powered rifle (photo'd below).
He allegedly gunned down victims in four or five locations across Hesston, 35 miles north of Wichita, on his way back to Excel Industries at 5 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
Witnesses at the office building, 35 miles north of Wichita, said Ford pulled up outside in a red van, shot somebody in the parking lot, then ran in.
Between four and seven people were shot dead and 20 to 30 injured before Ford was gunned down by police, sheriffs told a press conference.
One worker told KAKE News that Ford, of Newton, Kansas, had "mental issues" and was "being teased a little bit" when he worked at Excel.
But MediaTakeOut has learned that the "teasing" was racial in its nature. According to a family member of Kansas, Cedric was being "racially bullied" at his job.
Whatever the cause, it is a tragic situation that is NOT excusable in ANY fashion. Rest in peace to all the victims. And our prayers go to Craig's children.

Wanted ex-EFCC boss, Lamorde, dares Senate, appears in Jos

Wanted former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, was one of the 68 participants of the Course 38 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, near Jos, who were inaugurated by the institute on Friday.
The Senate had, on Thursday, given permission to its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, headed by Senator Sam Anyanwu, to issue a warrant of arrest on Lamorde
The committee, which investigated a petition against Lamorde by George Oboh, had asked the Senate for the order to issue the warrant of arrest against Lamorde to enable him to answer for his activities during his tenure.
However, while the senators were giving the order, Lamorde was in Jos as a student of NIPSS.The petition had accused Lamorde of misappropriating over N1tn funds.
The cat and mouse game between Lamorde and the lawmakers was reminiscent of the ordeal of his former boss, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu, who was demoted while he was admitted for the course.
However, a mild drama ensued on Friday, when as Lamorde was leaving the event, a newspaper vendor displayed before the ex-EFCC boss, a newspaper publication ordering his arrest.
Lamorde, who was the focus of attendees at the event, just blushed and disregarded the vendor and the publication.
When one of the reporters approached the vendor and asked if he knew it was Lamorde that he was showing the publication to, the vendor replied, “Na seni ai” (Yes, I know).
Speaking at the event, the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said the cardinal objectives of the present government was to tackle the scourge of unemployment and foster an inclusive development that would take marginalised and vulnerable segments of Nigeria out of poverty in the shortest time possible.
He said President Mohammadu Buhari chose the theme: “Strengthening Institutional Mechanisms for Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Development in Nigeria,” for Course 38, to enable the government to tackle the prevailing poverty rate in the country which has reached 61 per cent.
He said, “Nigeria ranks 152 out of the 183 countries in the Human Development Index assessment for 2014. This is quite worrisome and requires urgent attention and that is why one of the cardinal objectives of the present administration is to tackle the scourge of poverty.”
Osinbajo, who was represented by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, urged the participants to carry out extensive and detailed research on the challenges confronting public institutions saddled with the responsibility of implementing poverty reduction and inclusive development programmes in Nigeria.
He said recommendations of participants at the end of the programme should be geared towards accelerating the quest for sustainable national development and improving the living standard of the people.
In his welcome address, the representative of the Director General, National Institute, Prof. Mohammed Tijjani-Bande, described the theme as not only apt but also directly relevant to attempts at finding solutions to many of the social, political and economic problems affecting the nation.

Rev. King must die by hanging, Supreme Court orders

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the death sentence passed on the General-Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Chukwuemeka Ezeugo (aka Rev. King), by a Lagos High Court in Ikeja on January 11, 2007, for murder and attempted murder of some of his church members in 2006.
A five-man bench of the Supreme Court led by Justice Walter Onnoghen, in its unanimous judgement, dismissed the appeal by Ezeugo challenging the verdict of the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal, which had affirmed the conviction and the sentence passed on him by the Lagos High Court.
Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, who read the lead judgement of the apex court, resolved all the 12 issues raised by Ezeugo in his appeal against him and dismissed the entire appeal for lacking in merit.
“Having considered all the arguments proffered by the learned counsel for the parties, in addition to the records, I resolve all the 12 issues formulated by the appellants against him. Consequently, I hold that the appeal is bereft of merit and it is hereby dismissed. He said, “In his appeal to this court, 12 issues were distilled from the grounds of appeal by the appellant. The respondent had nine issues. The respondent’s nine issues were encompassed in the appellant’s 12 issues and, in spite of the imperfection in the appellant’s issues, I decided to determine the appeal on those issues. I considered all of them and at the end I came to the conclusion that, the appeal has no merit.
“The judgement of the Court of Appeal which had affirmed the judgement of the trial court is hereby affirmed. The prison terms of attempted murder are no longer relevant and discountenanced in view of the death penalty hereby affirmed. Appeal dismissed.”
The judgement dealt a final blow on the last effort by Ezeugo to free himself of the death sentence which has been hanging around his neck for over nine years.
The condemned cleric was arraigned before the Lagos High Court in Ikeja on September 26, 2006 on six counts of murder of a member of his church, Ann Uzoh, and attempted murder of five other members.
He was said to have poured petrol on the deceased and the five other victims and set them on fire for allegedly committing fornication.
Uzoh died on August 2, 2006, 11 days after the incident, as a result of the injuries which she sustained from the burns.
She was said to have been 65 per cent burnt in the fire incident. The trial judge, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole (now a Justice of the Court of Appeal), had in his judgement delivered on January 11, 2007 convicted Ezeugo and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment on each of the five counts of attempted murder and death sentence for murder.
Dissatisfied with Justice Oyewole’s judgement, Ezeugo appealed to the Court of Appeal.
But the Court of Appeal affirmed his conviction and the sentence passed on him.
He further appealed to the Supreme Court which also on Friday dismissed his appeal and affirmed the judgements of both the Lagos High Court and the Court of Appeal.
In his opening remarks, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, who read the lead judgement, said, “The fact of this case could have been lifted from a horror film.
“At all material times, both parties agreed that the appellant was General Overseer of Christian Praying Assembly, Ikeja, Lagos. It was also agreed that he had a father-son and father-daughter relationship with the victims of the incident.
“The prosecution’s case was that the appellant accused six of his people of immoral behaviour. He called them together, beat each of them with many hard objects and after the beating, he assembled them downstairs, made them to kneel down and he caused petrol to be poured on them and a struck match thrown on them.
“They all sustained various degrees of burns. While five of them escaped, the sixth of them who later died sustained 65 per cent degree burns. You can imagine her last day in the hospital.
“Appellant denied this incident, saying though he punished them for immoral behaviour, the punishment was different from the incident that gave birth to this charge.
“He said they sustained injuries when a generator exploded. That was his case. But throughout the proceedings, this mysterious generator was never produced.”
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government on Friday hailed the verdict of the Supreme Court. The State Government, through the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, said the judgement was another confirmation of the seriousness of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration to be decisive in fighting crime in the state. A statement signed by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs Office, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Bola Akingbade, quoted the commissioner as saying, “This is just another confirmation that the government of his Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, is going to be very strong on fighting crime. Wherever a crime is committed, no matter how long it takes, the government of Lagos State will ensure that the perpetrators of this crime face justice eventually.
“I salute the Supreme Court for this erudite judgement and I want to assure the public that we will continue and we will not relent in our fight to make Lagos a safer, secure and more prosperous state.”
In December 2015, the apex court, presided over by Justice Walter Onoghen, had adjourned for judgement after entertaining arguments from counsel to prosecution and defence in the matter.

IG directs police commands to inspect armouries

Following the explosion at the Police Divisional Headquarters, Yola, Adamawa State, on Thursday which claimed four lives, the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has directed all Commands’ Commissioners of Police to deploy the Anti-Bomb Squad personnel of their respective commands to inspect all explosive elements kept in their armouries to ensure they are safe.
He has equally directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Sontoye Wakama, to visit the scene of the blast in Adamawa State, to condole with the families of the deceased and to ensure that those who sustained injuries from the explosion receive prompt medical attention.

PDP group backs Fani-Kayode over Sheriff

The Peoples Democratic Party Solidarity Group on Friday expressed its support for a former Minister of Aviation and a former Director of Media and Publicity to the Goodluck Jonathan Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, for rejecting the emergence of the former Borno State Governor, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, as the National Chairman of the party.
The group said that Fani-Kayode’s opposition to Sheriff was intended to enthrone justice and equity in the party. The recent emergence of a former Borno State governor as the PDP National Chairman has sparked off controversy within the party. Pro-Sheriff camp, including governors, expressed confidence in the ability of the new chairman to reposition the party, but his critics said the opposition party did not need a leader of Sheriff’s character at the moment.
However, in a statement by its Chairman, Chief Taiwo Olaiya, the PDP Solidarity Group said the PDP Ministers Forum, which Fani-Kayode is a leading member, took the right step by rejecting Sheriff.
“More than anyone else in the party, he has spoken up for the Yoruba cause and stood for the interest of our leaders and people and we appreciate this. Anyone or group of persons that threatens him or seeks to oppose and destroy him or his career will be vigorously resisted.”The statement read, “We believe that the tremendous support that Fani-Kayode has given the PDP in Osun State and indeed the South-West over the last 15 years is exemplary and outstanding. More than anyone else he has risked his life for and committed his resources to the fortunes of the PDP over the years and we will not stand by and let anyone rubbish him.
