Nigeria's Murtala Mohammad Airport (MMIA), Lagos is officially the worst Airport in the world according to a blog visitor who just traveled back to Nigeria last Friday and arrived at MMIA on Saturday after about 4-years of studying and living overseas... see his message below:
"Ehh KachiZone, i really don't know where to start and how to start... but all i have to say at this beginning is that Nigeria is FAR FAR behind in everything... I mean EVERYTHING! or how can one explain that a country that claims to be the "biggest economy in Africa" not have the necessary developmental structures on ground? Well i have been overseas for over 4 years now in pursuit of my first degree and i was so happy when i got it and also got my masters degree last month... help me to than God because it wasn't an easy task; 3 years for Bsc and 1 year for Msc! So my parents decided i should come back home and figure what to do with my life after study... i was very happy with hope of great opportunities in Nigeria but from what i have seen so far, i doubt if there's any opportunity here... i don't want to sound sarcastic but that's the reality from what i'm seeing on ground. First i boarded an Ethiopia airline en-route Nigeria, we transited at Addis ababa, Ethiopia, while at the Ethiopian airport, i scolded their airport of falling short of standard little did i know that i was going to experience a "worst" airport in MMIA. I arrived at MMIA filled with oozing smells engulfing everywhere, i began sweating profusing no thanks to spoilt or no air-conditioner systems at all.... ok i got to the immigration officers area which took me close to 1 hour to be searched because ALMIGHTY MMIA has no airport scanning/screening machines... i was in great shock, especially as i have read online that Nigeria airports were refurbished by then scandalous Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah who reportedly spent billions of dollars $$$ to refurbish... Its appalling that MMIA doesn't have scanning machines even with all the money made from that airport and annual allocated budgets... let me ignore that and continue with my unpleasant ordeals at the airport... especially from the hands of Nigeria Immigration officers at the airport; Are those officers even paid? they sound and look like hungry people without any pride or integrity for themselves or Nigeria government which they represent... One of the officer ordered me to open my luggage which doesn't happen in other country because its the job of the scanning system... If its for security reasons, the scanning identifies any contraband, so security can't be a reason for an officer to ransack luggages, practically turning everything inside my luggage upside down! After searching and scattering my bags, he asked why am coming back with over 6 pairs of shoes, i was surprise by the silly question but didn't want to show it out but simply told him that i have family members i wanted to give some as gifts and he asked if i was sure that i bought them for my family members or i wanted to sell them?... (what a stupid question, i said that within myself though)... i told him the shoes are definitely not for sell and immediately, he started begging me for something, he didn't say what i should give him but said "anything for me?" "Wetin you bring for us?" "find me something?" He insisted that i have to give him something, and because i wanted to leave the airport, i gave him a bottle of perfume and he was all smiles... and i shoke my head in shock of how low this immigration officers have stoop to!... I left the airport as my elder brother brought his SUV to pick me up... as we were driving i was just shaking my head on how poor our roads, environments and social infrastructures are... while viewing Lagos metropolis from the car window, a "danfo" hit our SUV from behind but we were lucky it was a minor dent but i guess that was just to remind me that i was in Nigeria.... KachiZone, buttom line of this my experience is that Nigeria is still far behind in everything... NO POWER, POOR ROADS, DIRTY ENVIRONMENTS, POLLUTION, ARMED ROBBERS, UNEMPLOYMENT, INSECURITY, LAWLESSNESS.... etc..."
