‘Spiritual attack forced my son into robbery’ -- Mother

A middle-aged mother of four sent shock waves into the the spines of police detectives in Lagos recently, when, on seeing her first son being paraded as a suspected armed robber, she broke down and started crying out loud, telling everybody that cared to listen that his son could not have, ordinarily, done any bad thing.
Taiwo’s background, by his mum:
According to her, ‘’He went into robbery after having spiritual attack. As a mother, I have done all I could to make sure that Taiwo becomes useful to himself. After his father died, I tried my best with the little I had to ensure that he completed his secondary school education.
After that, I enrolled him in a printing outfit as an apprentice. He was attached to his boss for about a year and six months when he stopped. That was when I began to notice these despicable behaviours of his.
‘’I started with prayers, no result. I took him to various native doctors and prayer homes for deliverance yet, nothing changed. Rather, he got worse by the day. He has not always been like this, which is why I strongly believe this is the work of the enemy to render my son useless in life. I have never collected anything from him because I know the source of anything that comes through him is not clean. Even when he buys a gift for me, I reject it because I am strongly against his way of life. ‘’
How he was arrested: Madam Oluwole is the mother of 30-year-old Taiwo Oluwole who was arrested by eagle-eyed anti-robbery detectives in Lagos State. The suspect and one Segun Ogunlodo aka Sangbere, 26, and Akeem Raji were alleged to be members of a five-man armed robbery gang said to be terrorizing Ebute-Meta, Oko-Baba, Oyingbo and its environs.
The arrest of Taiwo Oluwole at the scene of a robbery operation at about 2a.m. reportedly led to the arrest of the other two suspects while efforts are in top gear to apprehend other members of the gang.   Crime Alert learnt that Taiwo Oluwole was accosted by men of Anti-robbery at the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba who were on routine patrol and a locally made pistol and three live cartridges were recovered from him at the scene.
Confessions: Confessing to the crime, Taiwo Oluwole said: ‘’ I am an armed robber and I have participated in several robbery operations. I started out as a pick-pocket, later I started breaking into people’s houses and stealing their valuables. Thereafter I graduated into full-fledged armed robbery two years ago. I bought the gun from Segun Ogunlodo. He sold the gun to me for N18, 000.
‘’I really can’t explain why or how I went into robbery, because after my secondary education, I went to learn printing for a year and six months but I didn’t complete my apprenticeship.
Completion of apprenticeship
I can’t explain why I stopped, because there was no reason. I later became a labourer. I strongly believe that it was a spiritual attack that led me into armed robbery.
“My mother has taken me to several churches, prayer houses and native doctors for deliverance yet nothing changed. I plead with the government to tender justice with mercy, I promise not to continue in my old ways once I come out of this alive,’’ he stated amidst tears.
Other suspects speak
‘’I was arrested at Mushin area, and about six phones were recovered from me. I bought the stolen phones from Taiwo. I knew they were stolen items. I started buying and selling stolen items like phones and laptops from guys like Taiwo since 2011. I was arrested after Taiwo was caught. In his defence, 26-year-old Segun Ogunlodo, aka Sangbere, said he was arrested because he sold a gun to Taiwo as he had no need for it.   I got the gun from my brother who is currently serving a jail term in a Cotonou prison for armed robbery related crimes.’’ Culled

Tragedy as two die in Ibadan community pit

It was a day of horror as tragedy strucked in Oremeji, Ibadan, Oyo State, recently when two middle-aged men died in the process of evacuating a “soak-away” pit.
The duo, Wasiu, a bricklayer and Solomon, a vulcanizer (surnames withheld) had been employed at No 12, Sobande Avenue, Oremeji, to evacuate a soak-away pit at the back of a two-storey building when the fatal accident occurred, they went into the pit and never came out.
When Daily Sun got to the scene of incident, residents who knew the two men had stormed the area, while some policemen were seen speaking to neighbours in the area. The lifeless bodies were also found laid on the floor by men of the Oyo State Fire Service, who had rushed to the area in the hope of rescuing the two victims.
The two who were allegedly hired by the landlord and tenants had resumed duty early in the morning when the incident occurred. It was gathered that the two had employed a pumping machine to suck out the first set of waste.
They had applied chemical to the last vestiges of the waste when Solomon entered to continue evacuation, but got weak due to heat and the strong smell of the chemical. It was said that Wasiu, who later tried to rescue his colleague also died in the process.
“It was not until 10am that the third person working with them came with pipes and found out that they had died in the pit. He was the one who raised the alarm,” said Adeseun Okunade, a neighbour.
“He said he was at Ijokodo when people came to tell him someone familiar to him had drowned in a soak-away pit: “I just rushed here to meet the policemen on duty and we were asked to wash their bodies.”
Oladimeji Akamo explained that Wasiu and Solomon must have accepted to do the job due to the poor financial situation affecting most artisans in the state, since it was not in their line of trade. Another woman who was being consoled was heard crying that Wasiu had a wife and three children and was reluctant to take the job.
It was gathered from another resident who did not want his name in print that the mother who was brought to the scene had been taken away, having been told her son only sustained minor injuries and had been rushed to the hospital.
The whereabouts of the landlord and tenants are still unknown, as the building has been deserted since the incident occurred.
When contacted, the the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the report said detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene on getting the report.
He said it was however, unfortunate that the police could not do anything to rescue them: “Efforts are already in place to get relatives of the deceased as preliminary investigation goes on.”

Obasanjo, Nigeria’s Number One enemy —Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the number one enemy of Nigeria, saying: “He is a confusionist who has lost his status as a statesman and Nigerians should simply ignore him.”
The governor, who expressed confidence that President Goodluck Jonathan will be reelected to complete his eight year-term, added: “Obasanjo is only fighting President Jonathan because he prevented him (Obasanjo) from ruling Nigeria from his Ota Farm.”
In a statement issued yesterday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said: “Obasanjo is a cancer that may never get cured in a lifetime. The moment Obasanjo is not the one controlling a house, he will want the house pulled down but this time around, he has failed.
“Obasanjo has always benefited from the misfortune of others and he is living with the impression that he is the wisest person in the whole world. When Murtala Mohammed was murdered in 1976, Obasanjo was the beneficiary. In 1993, he said the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, late Chief MKO Abiola, was not the messiah Nigeria needed. Instead of Obasanjo to join the clamour for the actualisation of Abiola’s mandate, Obasanjo was canvassing for an Interim National Government, which he schemed to head.
“MKO Abiola died in detention in 1998 and Obasanjo became the beneficiary of his (Abiola) death. Despite the fact that it was the blood of MKO Abiola that Obasanjo marched on to power, not even a street was named after Abiola throughout Obasanjo’s eight years as president.
“Today, Obasanjo is fighting President Jonathan, the man who has done what he failed to do for Abiola, the Yoruba people and Nigerians as a whole when he was president for eight years, simply because he does not want anyone to equal his record as Nigeria’s longest serving president.
“President Jonathan has made it impossible for Obasanjo to run his presidency for him and for this reason, he is supporting Buhari, hoping that he will be the one to nominate ministers for Buhari if he becomes president. However, I have this bad news for Obasanjo. Nigeria is not his football that he can kick around as he likes. President Jonathan will be reelected and Nigeria will be freed from Obasanjo’s bondage once and for all.” Culled

Bricklayer hacks neighbour to death over generator fumes

A 29-year-old bricklayer, Ibrahim Tijani, has hacked to death his neighbour, Bashorun Okanla, for complaining about fumes emanating from his generator.
The incident happened in the Okun Ajah, Ogombo area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect, an indigene of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and the deceased lived in an uncompleted building.
On the fateful day, Tijani was said to have turned on his generator around 11am, while the fumes escaped into the room of the 57-year-old carpenter.
Okanla, who was married with kids, was said to have cautioned Tijani and later, an argument started between them.
The argument was said to have degenerated into a fight and in the ensuing brawl, the suspect picked a cutlass from his room and cut the victim in the hand and leg.
He was rushed to a hospital in the area where he reportedly gave up the ghost.
A source, who pleaded anonymity, said the police from the Ogombo division recovered the cutlass used in committing the crime.
He said, “It was on February 8, 2015 around 11am. The suspect and the deceased were neighbours. They both lived in an uncompleted building, which I learnt was owned by a Nigerian based in the USA.
“Tijani turned on his generator and the fumes escaped into the room of Okanla, who dashed out and asked him to take away the generator from the place, but he refused. That was how they began fighting and dragged themselves into the bush.
“The man then picked a sharp cutlass and cut the deceased in the hand and leg and ran away.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect ran to the Ogombo Police Station to evade the wrath of residents.
They were said to have followed him there and told the police what had happened, leading to Tijani’s arrest.
It was learnt that Tijani, when interrogated by the police, confessed to the crime, adding that he had had a misunderstanding with the deceased before the incident.
He said, “On Sunday, I turned on my generator and when Baba Ade (Okanla) asked me to turn it off, I refused. Then he used a stick to hit me and we started fighting.
“A neighbour came and separated us and asked me to sit down beside him. But Baba Ade still went and destroyed my generator. I became angry and went inside my house and picked my cutlass. I used it on him.”
Our correspondent learnt that the deceased’s corpse had been deposited in a mortuary.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said the police had started investigation into the case.
He said, “Confirmed. Case transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation for further investigation.”

Man rapes four-year-old girl in Lagos

A 25-year-old man, Kingsley Churchill, has been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for raping a four-year-old girl.

Our correspondent gathered that Churchill had first inserted his fingers into the victim’s private parts before having sex with her.
The case was later reported to the police after it was discovered by her parents.
The defendant was arraigned on one count of sexual assault.
The charge read, “That you, Kingsley Churchill, on January 24, 2015, at Adeshokan Street, Ayobo, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did sexually assault a four-year-old girl by inserting both your finger and penis into her vagina.”
The police prosecutor, Etim Nkankuk, said the offence was punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
Churchill pleaded not guilty.
The defence counsel, J.A. Adewunmi, applied for his client’s bail in liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, A.O. Isaac, granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned till March 4, 2015. Culled

Two die, one arrested in supermarket robbery in Cross Rivers State

One armed robbery suspect was on Saturday shot dead after a gun duel with the police during a robbery operation that took place in a supermarket at the Ikot Effa area of Calabar, Cross River State.
Two robbery suspects were also arrested in the process while four others were said to have escaped. One of the arrested suspects, was said to have later died.
PUNCH Metro learnt on Sunday that the police acted on distress calls by the neighbours of the owner of the supermarket.
It was learnt that items recovered from the suspects included a locally-made pistol and 42 rounds of ammunition, machetes, mobile phones, electronic appliances and other valuables.
Narrating the incident, which occurred at about 8.30am on Ikot Effa Road, the supermarket owner, Mr. Akpan Ekerette, said he had initially thought the gunmen were customers who had come to buy provisions, but was shocked when two of them walked up to him at the counter and demanded all the money in his possession.
He said, “At first I didn’t know they were armed robbers because they were about five that came into the store, while others stood outside. Some were also in a red Audi saloon car. One of the suspects, who was eventually killed, hit me on the head with his gun and ordered me to bring money.
“I directed him to my drawer where I had close to N500, 000, including cash from the day’s sales. That was when I started screaming and my neighbours alerted the police who came in less than five minutes and the armed robbers started shooting, during the exchange of fire they apprehended two of them while others escaped.”
Ekerette said the attack would be the second time in 2015 that armed men would be visiting his supermarket.
“This is the second time they are attacking me this year. If not that the police responded on time I wonder what would have happened to me because apart from the money they took, they were also packing items from my shop including beverages and drinks,” he said.
It was learnt from the police that one of the two robbery suspects that were apprehended died at about 12am following injuries from the duel and his corpse had yet to be taken to the mortuary as at the time of filing this report.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, said members of the public played critical role in the success of the operation by promptly informing the police while the incident was ongoing.
Bassey said, “It was the timely tip-off that made it possible for us to get to the scene promptly. If this trend is maintained, the police will definitely rid the state of criminals. These armed robbers are not invincible. Useful information can go a long way in foiling their plans.”
