We Killed Five People After A Political Rally ─ Suspected Political thugs

The police in Lagos have nabbed three suspected political thugs, who confessed to have shot five persons dead after a political rally at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island, during the last general elections.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects ─ Adebayo Dipo, Alade Ogbulu and a Ghanaian, Kofi Olumede ─ were arrested by the Commissioner of Police’s Crack Squad on the Lagos Island.
It will be recalled that four people, including a chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Azeez Ashake, lost their lives on Sunday, September 21, 2014, after a fatal clash between thugs loyal to the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.
It was learnt that the three suspects were, however, arrested during a raid on the Lagos Island area in May 2015, by the squad.
Our correspondent gathered that one pump-action rifle, one single-barrelled rifle, four rounds of cartridges, two cutlasses and one axe were recovered from the trio after their arrest.
The police said the suspects, who claimed to be working for one Rafiu Abija, presently at large, have confessed to banditry and killings on the Lagos Island.
The police added that efforts were on to apprehend Abija, said to be the ring leader of the gang known as the Abija Group.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, 21-year-old Olumede, who said he travelled from Ghana to Lagos in 2007, said it was the APC thugs who engaged them in a fight during which they responded and killed the five persons.
He said, “We belong to the Abija Group. If we count those who have been killed, they are about six.
“After a political rally in Lagos, some of our boys shot dead Otun, who brought his boys to engage us in a fight. It was one Layi, our gang member, who shot him.
“On the following day, the APC faction came to Enuwa area to engage us. We killed four of their members.
“We are loyal to Abija. It was Abija who brought all these guns. Abija had so many boys. I was a meat pie seller before I joined the group on the Lagos Island.”
Dipo, 30, from the Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State, however, denied that the gang killed five persons after the rally.
He said, “It was only Ashake that we killed. The others died during clashes with our gang. We also lost some of our members during the clashes.”
The CP, Kayode Aderanti, advised the general public to always provide the police with credible information to enable them to raid dark spots in the state.
He said, “They have confessed to be members of the Abija Group that has been terrorising the Island area. We appeal to members of the public to cooperate with the police to ensure safety.”

Evil Cooks Poison Employer's Family Soup, Land Couple In Hospital

Two cooks, who are nationals of the Benin Republic, Victor Hounkpe and David Amusu, have been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly poisoning their employers’ meal in the Lekki area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the employers ─ Mr. Nwogu Chinaka, and his wife, Omowunmi ─ were taken to a hospital outside the country after eating the poisoned meal.
Our correspondent gathered that apart from the couple, the security guards and other domestic workers who ate the poisoned meal became unconscious and were hospitalised.
It was learnt that on Wednesday, April 22, at about 5pm, Hounkpe, who had stayed for about a month in the house, prepared a vegetable soup for the family.
Our correspondent gathered that all members of the family, including the security personnel in the compound ate the soup which was served by the cook for dinner.
Minutes later, the husband, Nwogu, reportedly developed a severe stomach ache and collapsed, while Omowunmi rushed him to a nearby hospital.
The wife, however, also became unconscious and fell at the gate of the hospital after she allegedly had a severe stomach pain. The couple was treated in the same hospital.
Our correspondent gathered that two security guards in the compound were brought to the hospital later in the day.
It was gathered that Hounkpe and Amusu reportedly fled from the house during the incident.
The police said the couple later wrote a petition to the Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, on the matter, and after investigation by the Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, the runaway cooks were arrested.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, 34-year-old Hounkpe said he put the substance in the family’s soup to make everybody fall asleep so that valuables in the house could be easily carted away.
“I am from the Benin Republic. I came to Nigeria in 2007. I have always worked as a cook in Lagos. David was the agent who brought me to the couples’ house. He was the one who gave me the substance to put inside the soup. He told me the substance was a sleeping pill. The plan was that everyone would fall asleep.
“They wanted to steal gold and other valuables. I put the substance inside the vegetable soup. It was a powdery substance. I had worked with them for about a month. The couple did not offend us. They were to pay me N50,000 monthly. We just wanted them to sleep off. I ran to the Ogudu area after the incident to pick up another job. That was where I was arrested.”
Amusu, 33, added that the gang was about raiding the couples’ apartment when the duo became unconscious and was rushed to a hospital.
He said, “I was a former cook in the house. I was the one who brought Victor (Hounkpe). On the fateful day, when Victor finished cooking the soup, he called me to say the job had been done. But then, we learnt that the couple was rushed to a hospital after falling unconscious. So, we fled the area.”
The police added that the plan was to use Hounkpe as an insider to give free access to the robbery gang. Amusu was to lead the gang members into the compound. They added that the plan was foiled.
The CP, Aderanti, who paraded the suspects, advised residents of Lagos to always do background checks on people employed into their homes and places of work.
He said, “They have both confessed to the crime. The couple has been flown abroad for treatment. I want the public to always be careful about the people they bring into their homes. In Lagos, there is no place for criminals to hide.”

SAD! See Nigerian music star, Majek Fashek now begging

This is really saddening seeing a one time Nigerian and African music legend Majek Fashek begging on the streets of Lagos -State.
According to Joseph Edgar who shared the photo and the information of Majek Fashek begging on the street of Lagos...
The problem was that he was begging for money in order to buy Ogogoro (local alcoholic spirit).
Moral of this goes to other artist to be careful and make sure they're not addicted to hard drugs or alcohol... and also they should save for the raining day as they won't be artist forever!

YES! Man, 27, jailed 21 years for raping 6-yr-old girl

A foodstuff seller, Chidi Ibiam, 27, was yesterday sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by an Ikeja High Court for defiling a six-year-old girl. They worship in the same church.
The presiding judge, Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya, found the convict who lives at Baruwa, Ipaja area of Lagos, guilty of one-count charge of defilement.
The judge held: “I have noted all the relevant facts of this case before me. The defendant is, hereby, found guilty of the crime of defilement and is sentenced to 21 years in prison.”
During the trial, the prosecution, led by state counsel, Mr Adebayo Haroun, had told the court that Ibiam committed the offence on December 15, 2012, and was caught after the victim reported the assault to her mother.
According to the prosecution, the convict is well known to the victim’s family as he was a neighbour and fellow church member.
Testifying before the judge, the six-year-old girl (names withheld), had told the court that the defendant had unlawful carnal knowledge of her on 12 different occasions: at a shop, a neighbour’s house, among other places.
The victim referred to Ibiam’s genitals as “tom tom” throughout her testimony.
Ogunsanya, who noted this fact in her judgement, admonished parents to start teaching their children the rightful names of male and female genitals.
She said: “Parents should teach their children the right names of genitals and give their wards proper sex education.” Culled

The media almost destroyed my marriage -- Actor, Ramsey Nouah

Ramsey Nouah is one of the most-sought-after and handsome actors in Nollywood who has been consistent in his career. Nouah who is known as ‘loverboy’ for his many roles in romantic movies, in this interview, the 2010 Africa Movie Academy Award winner for Best Actor in a leading Role shares the pathetic story of his journey into acting, the industry and why he stopped attending public functions with his family.
How did you begin your journey into the movie industry?
My journey into the movie industry actually started when I was trying to sit for my GCE examination. I didn’t have money to purchase my GCE form, and there were no jobs then. It was hard to secure menial jobs and I couldn’t bring myself to do such jobs. Later, a friend of mine advised me to try my hand at acting. But I didn’t welcome the advice because I prefer to act in Hollywood. It was funny.
Later I went for a couple of auditions and precisely in 1990, I went for a soap opera audition called Fortunes and was engaged. Later it had problem with the title and so it was changed to ‘Mega Fortune.’ I was one of the key actors in that soap and it was better than Telemundo.
After starring in that soap, I did a couple of movies that didn’t see the light of day. I was supposed to have featured in the famous “Glamour Girls” but the producer was too stingy. He was very professional, and actually brought a letter inviting me for audition for “Glamour Girls” and I played my role. He jumped from his seat and shouted yes, that’s the guy I’ve been looking for.
He invited me for negotiations and to my disappointment, he was pricing me like I was a meat in the market. It didn’t work out. I actually became a hustler working with marketers and other practitioners. I was in all the episodes in Fortunes as Jeff Akin-Thomas and was paid N100 per episode. I was paid N1,200 for only a quarter. I was in that soap just for the passion. Things were bad that I didn’t have clothes, my trousers were torn.
I actually patched my trousers by myself. Thank God my mom taught me how to sew. With the 1,200, I rushed to Yaba to purchase second hand clothes. I looked at myself after I had washed and ironed them and said, “Ramsey, you have arrived now.” I wasn’t thinking of the cash or fame though I was in serious need. I didn’t even know the benefits of being an actor.
It took me time to be used to my fans rushing at me and appreciating me until my producers told me it was normal. As time went on the job actually began paying my bills. With the first major money I earned, I bought a sound system, TV and later Air conditioner. By 1996, filmmakers discovered that I am a better actor as a lover boy so I was typecast as a lover boy. I played love in my life and grew tired. Whenever they brought love stories, I asked if there wasn’t any other issue they could talk about.
Later in 2003, there was a nose dive as pirates made it impossible for filmmakers to get back their money so, they began churning out films. Some of us who are more concerned about making Nollywood a brand, began thinking of how to make things better. At this point, cinema came as a huge breakthrough, Bank of Industry has also been helpful unlike the banks. Today I’m very happy about how things turned out.
You were the guest speaker at a Nollywood event held at the Pan African University, Lagos, recently, how was the experience?
I saw that as an opportunity to exchange ideas. A lot of people don’t know what’s going on in the industry so I was elated when I discovered that there is a Nollywood Study Centre there. That means Nollywood is going pretty far. So, with honour I obliged to come and share my experience with people who are aspiring to join the industry and also, to let people know that the industry is not secluded but an open market.
Before AY’s “30 Days In Atlanta”, you have been missing on screen. What happened?
It’s not like I went off the screen. You know that I have been one of the pioneers wanting to fly the new Nollywood. You know the industry lacks structure, it’s almost like buying and selling which it shouldn’t be. It’s like you come and act, they pay you off and there is no future for you. It ends there ; there’s no pension plan, some of my colleagues were sick and when they died, we had to start begging from people to bury them. That’s too bad.
What else do you need since the past President Goodluck Jonathan set up a grant for filmmakers to access?
The grant is not enough to sustain the industry. We need structure, the structure I’m talking about predominantly is distribution. The distribution channels. If we have more cinemas in the country there will be a huge improvement. “30 days in Atlanta” for instance, showed in only 13 cinemas in Nigeria and gross more than 160 million naira before it was pirated by our Alaba brothers.
It sold even more than Avatar, only in 13 cinemas. Imagine if it is in 20, 100 or even 200 cinemas, you do the math, and understand that Nollywood is a big industry that can sustain itself.
Why did you call being a celebrity a cross?
Well it is a bigger cross than you can think about because you have to be concerned about your looks. You must make sure that everything is on point. Dress properly to suite every event. You have to build on your looks and image so that people will admire you. It makes you classy and a role model. Your behaviour or attitude is another selling point. If you maintain good looks and image, big multinationals will be after you.
If your track record is bad then there’s no space for you. People look at us and want to be like us not understanding that we wish we had a more normal or simple life style. Ramsey will dare not be seen fighting on the streets. I better turn the other cheek to be slapped a second time than retaliate. Although there are benefits for instance, the pay is good, you got to be admired but then, its a cross.
As a celebrity, who are the set of people who avoid most?
It is the Press! I might just say hello to a girl and the next thing is, Ramsey Nouh is toasting one girl. The media almost destroyed my marriage. But thank God they failed and my marriage is 14 years now blessed with four children. I told my wife to keep away from the press, let me handle them. If they don’t see you, there will be nothing to say about you. Because of that, I have stopped appearing at public functions with my family.
Aside the restriction, how have you been able to deal with the press?
The best way to deal with the press is to ignore them. Whenever they start telling lies about you, just ignore them. The greatest mistake you’ll make is to respond to scandals. When you ignore them, the stories die off with time.
What else has being a celebrity done to you?
It has prevented me from enjoying quality private time with my family.
If you are to change anything, what would that be?
Get back my private life.
We see same faces in so many movies, does it mean that producers don’t call for auditions anymore?
Auditions are publicised even on the social media. The problem is that producers want to put their money down and get it back. So, content must be sold and if they use new faces, it wont sell.
How then can up and coming actors break into the industry?
Just believe in yourself, be passionate about your career and let nothing stop you from pressing forward.
What’s responsible for your transforming into a star actor?
Hard work and passion. Also, the mirror has been my best teacher. It helps me learn to get into character and improve upon my job. I am concerned about how to make the industry great, so passion remains my motivator.
Most challenging movie?
The most challenging is “Dangerous Twins” because there was no technology sophistication at the time of production. Everything was done manually. One scene took two days to be shot, so it was tasking. But then, it was part of the tutorial to be professional.

Police arrest boyfriend of missing UNILAG student

A dancer, Samson Babarinde, and two of his friends have been arrested by the police over the disappearance of a 22-year-old student of the University of Lagos, Bunmi Oluwa.
It was gathered that Oluwa and Babarinde were dating each other.
The 300-level student, who lived with her sister in the Lekki area of the state, was said to have been missing since Tuesday, May 12.
It was learnt that she had told her sister that she was going to school on the fateful day but reportedly headed for a bar in Small Kuramo, a neighbouring community, where Babarinde and his friends – Patrick Okechukwu and Lucky Onuah – work as dancers.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Babarinde, who is also a mechanic, took Oluwa to his house in Ijora, where she spent some days.
It was gathered that Oluwa’s family had searched for her to no avail.
PUNCH Metro learnt that her father, Alhaji Taofeeq, eventually reported the incident at the Ilasan Police Station after he was told that she was with her lover.
Twenty-three-year-old Babarinde, who hails from the Ipokia Local Government Area, Osun State, however, told the police that although Oluwa came to his house, he had sent her packing when he learnt her father was looking for her.
He added that while they were together, her aunt called her on the phone to inquire about a sum of N15,000.
He said, “We met each other at Oganla bar in Small Kuramo. I wooed her and she accepted. She told me she would be coming to my house every Friday and be leaving on Monday.
“She came to my house in Ijora on Wednesday. The following day, her sister told her on the phone that she should bring her N15,000. But Bunmi (Oluwa) said she did not want to go home without the money. When I learnt that her mum was coming here, I told her to go. I have not seen her since then.”
Okechukwu said he had warned his friend not to allow Oluwa sleep in his house, but his advice was ignored.
“Bunmi came to the bar that fateful day and Samson (Babarinde) said she was going to pass the night with him. Onuah and I advised him against it, but he ignored us. I did not know about her whereabouts after then,” he said.
A police prosecutor, Inspector I. Okeke, on Monday, brought the three suspects before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on two counts of abduction.
The charge read, “That you, Samson Babarinde, Patrick Okechukwu and Lucky Onuah, on May 12, 2015 till date, at Small Kuramo, Lekki in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area, within Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit: abduction.
“That you, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did abduct one Bunmi Oluwa out of the custody of her parent.”
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, which, according to the police, contravene sections 409 and 266 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
The presiding magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, admitted them to bail in the sum of N50,000, with two sureties each in like sum.
The case was adjourned till June 23, 2015.

Three kidnappers arrested for death of 11-year-old girl

The police in Ogun State have arrested three suspected kidnappers for allegedly killing an 11-year-old girl, Aminat Ishola.
The suspects ─ Babatunde Aderonmu, Sina Damilare, and Kola Taofeek ─ were said to have kidnapped the minor, and administered a powdery substance on her while she was in their den, which later resulted in her death.
Aminat, a primary five pupil was reportedly kidnapped at Arugudu in the Ijoko area of Sango in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area on May 21.
It was learnt that she was subsequently moved to the Osun-Jegede, Ogbere area of Ibadan in Oyo State, where she was held captive.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, while parading the suspects on Wednesday in Abeokuta, said one of the suspects, Aderounmu, a former employee of the victim’s father at his bakery, masterminded the abduction.
He was said to have confessed that the girl died after Taofeek, who claimed to be an Alfa (Islamic cleric) administered a powdery substance on the victim to hypnotize her.
Adejobi said, “After kidnapping the girl, she was taken to Osun-Jegede. On the second day, the girl died because they administered some substance on the girl which is suspected to be poison.
“The prime suspect, Aderounmu said Taofeek, who claimed to be an Alfa administered the substance on the girl, which eventually killed her.
“After the girl had died, they packed her corpse into a sack and dumped the sack opposite Ogbere Police Station in Ibadan.
“The following day, a woman whose shop is close to the police station noticed the sack and called the attention of the police . The Divisional Police Officer ordered the opening of the sack and it was discovered that it was a corpse.
“We have carried out an autopsy on the girl and we are awaiting the result.”
Adejobi said the suspects had contacted the parents of the girl and demanded N2m ransom before they would release her, but they finally agreed on N300,000.
He said, “It was at this stage that the parents reported the matter to the police and we swung into action.
“The officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad commenced investigation on the matter, which led to the arrest of the lead suspect, Aderonmu.
“The suspect had sent the account number of a prophetess, who they claimed prayed for them, to the parents.
“The suspects had also confessed that they employed the service of an Alfa who administered a substance on the girl, which led to her death.
“They said they dumped her remains very close to the Divisional Police Station.”

Man nabbed for torturing his four-year-old son

The police in Lagos have arrested a man, Sikiru Mustapha, who allegedly brutalized his four-year-old son, and abandoned him at a bus station in the Iwaya area of Yaba.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the boy, identified only as Lekan, reportedly had scars of the torture on his body. He was, however, picked up by a neighbour.
Our correspondent gathered that Lekan was reportedly handed over to a non-governmental organisation in the area, which took him to the Sabo Police Division.
It was gathered that the police subsequently arrested the father.
A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told PUNCH Metro that Lekan’s mother had been sent away by Sikiru, and he had married a new wife.
She said, “Lekan has a long history of torture from his father. He is poorly taken care of, beaten and left to wander in the area. As young as he is, the father beats him without mercy. On Tuesday, he was beaten up as usual. But this time, he was abandoned at a bus station.
“One of the residents of this area found him and took him to an NGO. He was then taken to the Sabo Police Division, and the police arrested the father.
“Sikiru has a new wife who is a nursing mother. She should have cautioned her husband against maltreating the boy, but she did not.”
Our correspondent learnt that Lekan was now recuperating in a hospital in the Surulere area.
When PUNCH Metro visited the hospital on Wednesday, it was gathered that some officials from the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender and the Domestic Sexual Violence Response Team, to whom Lekan’s torture was also reported, had visited and taken up the case of the boy.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident. He added that the suspect had been taken to court.
He said, “We arrested the suspect for maltreating his son.
“He has been taken to court in company with some personnel from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.”
